Lutheran Social Services of Michigan (LSSM) creates communities of service. We walk with people in need, offering hope and compassion while upholding their dignity, advocating for equality and justice, and seeking creative solutions.
A social ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), LSSM is not just for Lutherans. The church has been meeting people’s needs since the early 1900s when a Lutheran "city missionary" arrived in Detroit to provide services to the poor. From the very beginning, Lutheran Social Services has reached out to individuals regardless of their religion, race, ethnicity or national origin.
The organization was incorporated as the Lutheran Inner Mission League in 1934. Today, Lutheran Social Services of Michigan spans the state’s Lower Peninsula with more than 70 programs in 40 cities. Lutheran Social Services’ diverse staff share a dedication to serving their fellow humans by doing the right thing, for the right reasons, every day.
Bethlehem has provided financial support for global missionaries for many years. Currently the congregation helps to support Pastor Rod Nordby and his wife Nancy Anderson, who serve as missionaries in Lae, Papua New Guinea.

Do you remember the pancake dinner/breakfast and silent auction that Bethlehem held last May? The funds raised, including supplemental funds from Thrivent Financial, were over $3,000. The money was sent to LSSM and designated for sending four foster kids to Camp Michi-Lu-Ca for a week of camp activities.
