We journey with God, to serve with love

Hope in Our Heroes

March 25, 2020

My husband, Trent, works as a pharmacy technician. Almost every day since things have begun to escalate, he has been braving the risk of exposure along with other healthcare workers. Whenever I see him put on his smock and watch him head out the door, I can’t help but think of the healthcare workers who are putting themselves in harm’s way for the benefit of others.

One of the most crucial ways to demonstrate love for God is to take action and help others. That’s what these brave individuals are doing every day. It's not just healthcare workers either.  People from everywhere are stepping up and taking care of each other however they can.  I was talking to my mom this morning who had heard from my aunt that Kohl's is going to be paying all of their employees what they were scheduled to work during the month of March--regardless of what they actually worked so that their employees don't have to worry about making enough money to pay their bills.  Charter is offering free internet for the next 60 days to those who need access and have students in K-12 or college! My old high school in Cadillac has organized and is helping with a food drive for students who need lunches. These big name companies and individuals are looking past the dollar signs and the risks involved to help those who need it.

This gives me such a feeling of HOPE. God is with us as we go about this uncertain and frankly scary journey...but He has put some amazing people in place to do their part and take care of us here on Earth. I think of the bible verse; “We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor.” (Romans 15:1-2 NRSV).  I hold onto the hope that no matter what happens, that God has placed these people in these roles to help those who are in need, whether it's due to illness or otherwise. I’m so thankful for these people for risking things to protect all of us and I’m thankful to God for giving these people the skills and gifts so that they can go out into the world so they can help keep us safe.

Home Depot has stayed open because they are considered an essential retailer. Many of our employees are concerned that Home Depot is becoming the place to go, out of boredom. This can be very concerning. However, Home Depot stepped up and offered emergency time off for ALL associates to help cover the weeks of strife. They also are paying a weekly "bonus" to help in need. This is incredible!! For those of you who know us, Renae Wells and I bleed orange(love the company we work for), for these VERY reasons. God, thank you for the HOPE to get us through this rocky road!!
