Day Forty (Holy Saturday, April 19) - Living with Purpose

April 19, 2014

Here is the "Thinking About My Purpose" chapter summary by Rick Warren for Purpose #5 (You Were Made for a Mission) Day Thirty-six - Living with Purpose
Point to Ponder: Living with Purpose is the only way to really live.
Verse to Remember: "For David...served the purpose of God in his own generation." ACTS 13:36
Question to Consider: When will I take the time to write down my answers to life's five great questions? When will I put my purpose on paper?

Some thoughts from Bethlehem member Renae W. :

For the past 39 days, we have been inspired with ideas to lead our life with purpose during Lent.  We know what God wants us to do, so now we need to actually be committed to doing these things 365 days of the year.  We've learned that living with purpose is the only way to have a happy, fulfilled, and blessings filled life.  We had to admit that we may have to...

Day Thirty-nine (Good Friday, April 18) - Balancing Your Life

April 18, 2014

Here is the "Thinking About My Purpose" chapter summary by Rick Warren for Purpose #5 (You Were Made for a Mission) Day Thirty-nine - Balancing Your Life
Point to Ponder: Blessed are the balanced.
Verse to Remember: "Live faith with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning of life but as those who do."  EPHESIANS 5:15 (PHTranslation)
Question to Consider: Which of the four activities will I begin in order to stay on track and balance God's five purposes for my life?

Some thoughts from Bethlehem member Kate H. :

In todays world, the world of cell phones, email, texting, meetings, work schedules, doctors appts and on, and on....the thought of balancing my life seemed a bit overwhelming.  After reading the chapter I realized that it was my spiritual life that was being evaluated.  I usually don't think too hard about my spiritual life beyond my belief and trust in the Lord.  But here we are introduced to 5 Purposes for our spiritual lives.
Looking at them briefly:

Day Thirty-eight (Maundy/Holy Thursday, April 17) - Becoming a World-Class Christian

April 17, 2014

Here is the "Thinking About My Purpose" chapter summary by Rick Warren for Purpose #5 (You Were Made for a Mission) Day Thirty-eight  - Becoming a World-Class Christian
Point to Ponder: The Great Commission is my commission.
Verse to Remember: "Send us around the world with the news of your saving power and your eternal plan for all mankind." PSALM 67:2 (LB Translation)
Question to Consider: What steps can I take to prepare to go on a short-term missions experience in the next year?

Some thoughts from Bethlehem member Jana R. :

Jesus said to his followers, “Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.” Mark 16:15

The Great Commission is Your Commission.

Before I read this chapter, I didn't know there even was a great commission.  Seriously, I had no idea.  I have always know that, as a Christian, spreading the word of God is part of my responsibility.  But I don't think I ever realized how to bring this notion home on a very personal level.  Truth be told, spreading the word sounds a lot like evangelism and I sometimes get uncomfortable standing up in the 5 pm service to share the peace with fellow Bethlehem Lutherans – you can imagine how traveling to another country...

Day Thirty-seven (Wednesday, April 16) - Sharing Your Life Message

April 16, 2014

Here is the "Thinking About My Purpose" chapter summary by Rick Warren for Purpose #5 (You Were Made for a Mission) Day Thirty-seven  -  Sharing Your Life Message

Point to Ponder: God wants to say something to the world through me.

Verse to Remember: “Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, but do it with gentleness and respect.” 1 PETER 3:15b-16a (TEV)

Question to Consider: As I reflect on my personal story, who does God want me to share it with?

Some thoughts from Carolyn M:

In this chapter, Warren speaks about how each of us as believers need to realize that God also wants us to share our faith. He cites four points, one of which sharing our godly passions. The fabric of my faith story has evolved through many years. It is interwoven with stories of those whom I have met along the way, and the gifts I have received from them and from their stories...

Day Thirty-six - We are made for a mission.

Rick Warren describes a well-framed, Purpose-Driven Life as “two bookends”. In Jesus’ case, it was the years between declaring his mission and dying on the cross. So your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to continue the mission that Jesus started.

We are tasked by God to do more than ministry. Many of us already offer our time, talents, and service to others inside of church. That is ministry. But “mission” is doing those things outside of church, and reaching non-believers or those we don’t see every Sunday who may need...
